I believe the reason for this is simply fear. Fear that the Wake & Shake must be a dreadfully short cut or that is some weird age inappropriate style.

Allow me to reassure you. I hate short hair; in fact, if your hair is shorter than three inches on top – please don’t come in.  Short hair lays down flat and cowlicks are uncontrollable if the hair is cut too short.  Length – the right length, gives you more control and is easier to style.

As far as me giving you a foolish looking cut – that simply would not happen.  The bulk of my clients are professional women largely between their late thirties to seventies (though I do have a few clients in their mid eighties). I will consult with you before I cut your hair. And if I don’t think I can make you happy, I will politely offer you the opportunity to leave.  My goal first and foremost is to give you a cut that will flatter your face and will work with your hair. I will always give you an age appropriate cut, though hopefully one that makes you look younger and more sophisticated.

It also tells the world something about your self esteem, level of education, and sophistication. Can you really afford a cheap cut? A better cut might cost more but it will last longer while looking so much better.  So come on – dare to be the New You. (There’s really nothing to be afraid of.)

The initial cut must be done on clean dry hair. To cut curly hair one must truly carve the shape. To begin much of the cutting is done with a T edger. It is more like hedge trimming than hair cutting. After the rough shape of the hair is cut this way, the hair may be shampooed and recut wet. Even then, Ian tells his curly hair clients that when they do their hair themselves, it may pull up differently than it has in the salon. If that does occur, Ian encourages them to return so that can  touch up the cut. It is a more time consuming procedure, so please advise Ian at the time you make your appointment, so that he can plan accordingly. Always remember: no cut can change the texture of your hair. If you come in with curly hair you will leave with curly hair.

And sadly, many stylists know as little as you do about hair color formulation.
1. The color should suit your complexion. So many people choose the wrong color resulting in a color that can make them appear sickly or older. As with the cut, the most important function of your hair is to enhance your face.
2. It should look natural. Most home hair color comes out looking very fake: the ends darker than the roots. This is completely backwards; even natural hair color fades so the roots should always be darker than the ends. However since that box of hair color recommends you comb the color through – something a good colorist would never do, the older porous ends grab the color more than the roots. Also combing the color through especially with home tints results in the color coming out very flat and one dimensional. Even if your ends are faded enough to warrant refreshing, a completely different formula should be put on the ends than the roots.
3. Gray hair aside, even that hair that retains its natural color changes with age, becoming darker, flatter, ashier (drab). A good colorist will do what is needed to subtly or not so subtly restore your hair to a more youthful healthy look. Look at a childs hair color – it is not all one flat color but many variations. A good colorist will seek to do that by adding highlights and low lights as needed. Since I refuse to do substandard work, I have only one price for color and always include the foils highlights and/or low lights with the service at no extra charge.
4. And finally, initial appearance aside, salon color when properly formulated is far more gentle than that box which presumes that your hair is color resistant (few heads are). A more gentle formulation preserves the health of the hair and fades far less.

The function of a good cut or style is to enhance the appearance of your face. This means that what looks right for one person might not be right for another. I have seen women wearing beautifully done cuts that were totally wrong for them. If the cut does not make your face appear more attractive, then it is not the right cut for you.
A simple example would be a long hairstyle on an older woman. Now please understand, I personally prefer long hair – however there is a principle regarding the eye and lines. Simply stated: the eye follows the line. This means that if you are over a certain age, hair that falls too far below the jaw line will draw the viewers eye down causing the face of the woman who is wearing a too long cut to appear older and tired. A more appropriate cut will not drag the face down, and as with a good face lift, you will appear refreshed.
A proper style will balance the face; rounding out a long face or giving a too round face a slimmer shape.
Another mistake women make, is wearing a hairstyle that is hopelessly out of date. What looked good twenty or thirty years ago probably no longer suits you and says things about your level of sophistication you’d rather not hear.
Your hairstyle and hair color make a statement about your education and even your socio-economic class.
My main focus is simply for you to look your best. I never recommend hairstyles or haircolor based on trendiness. I will only do that which will work for you and your hair.
You wear your hair every day, wearing a cheap cut is like wearing a poorly made piece of clothing – don’t do that. For better or worse we live in a world that is hyper sensitive to branding. Don’t be the cheap brand when it doesn’t cost all that much to look like quality. Face the world looking your very best.
